SCCDC Parent Pages - Keeping Parents Informed and Involved!
UNIVERSAL
PRE-KINDERGARTEN
(UPK)

SCCDC has UPK classrooms at two locations:

  • Cobleskill
  • Sharon Springs

What is UPK?

The Universal Pre-Kindergarten program serves children who are 4 years old.  UPK offers a three to four hour program operating five days per week, following the public school calendar from September to June.

Currently there are programs operating in collaboration with Sharon Springs Central School and Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School Districts.

Guidelines and Eligibility for UPK

The program works closely with the school district that the UPK classrooms are located.  The children must be a resident of the school district that they live in to be eligible for the program.  By combining  UPK and Head Start resources, Schoharie County Child Development Council has been able to provide programming that exceeds the minimum requirements of both programs. Children that qualify for Head Start and UPK programming will attend class with the same peers that they will study and play side-by-side with upon entering Kindergarten.

SCCDC's UPK programs primary goals are to assist families in breaking the cycle of poverty and to prepare children for success in the public school.  Parent education, identification of family strengths, and the recognition of individual talents assists UPK in reaching these expectations with families. This has been successfully accomplished by encouraging families to further their education and by providing them with opportunities for personal growth.

Additionally, a high quality preschool experience is provided to ensure children, including those with disabilities, have reached their fullest potential.
Outcome reports from the 2007-2008 program year document the program’s achievements in the areas of literacy and numeric skills development. This year we look forward to even higher achievements and greater success.
